In the wake of this Tibetan spiritual "Awake" project, many colleges, high schools and grade schools, in spite of the neo-Nazi overtones, have been desensitized and are, in fact, being drawn into this Tibetan witchcraft. Salvation: Images of the Buddhist Deity of
Compassion
August 14, 2003 � February 15, 2004
Exhibition of the most celebrated image of Buddhism, the deity known first
as Avalokiteshvara�The Compassionate Lord�in South Asia, and later
as Guanyin, Kwanum, and Kannon in East Asia. Selection of sculptures and paintings
from LACMA�s Center for Asian Art displayed in the traditional style
of Buddhist temple shrines.
Drawing on Faith: Ink Paintings for Korean Buddhist Icons
August 21, 2003 � February 1, 2004
Exhibition of dynamic ink paintings created as models for colorful altar images
by a lineage of monk painters from the main school of Korean Buddhism. These
rare brushwork sketches are shown along with finished paintings.
Transmitting Culture: Korean Ceramics from Korean-American Collections
August 21, 2003 � February 1, 2004
Exhibition of ancient to modern ceramics that illustrate the major developments
of Korean stoneware, celadons, and porcelains drawn from Southern California
Korean-American collections, all of which have been given or are promised
to LACMA.

Visual Mantras: Meditative Traditions
in Japanese Buddhist Art

This exhibition
will present a selection of contemplative images used within traditional Japanese
Buddhist culture. Covering several centuries (1500-1950), this exhibition will
include devotional figure painting as well as Zen calligraphy and painting,
situating these images within their particular cultural contexts and exploring
their varied uses for teaching and meditation. This exhibition is presented
in conjunction with the Smart Museum's major exhibition of works by Hiroshi
Sugimoto.

photographers captured the great architectural sites of India�from Mughal, Jain,
and Sikh monuments in the north to Hindu temples in the southern region of Tamil
Nadu to other Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist monuments in central India�reflecting
imperial attitudes to travel, archaeology, and the politics of memory. The exhibition
presents more than 200 master photographs, as well as drawings, books, artifacts,
and a selection of popular imagery, situating them in a changing political culture.
